Responsible Dog Ownership Month

Did you know that September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month? While we of course strongly believe that pet owners should be responsible at all times, this is a great time to go over some of the key aspects of good doggy parenting. Read on as an Ashburn, VA vet discusses responsible dog ownership.

Diet

Proper nutrition is crucial to your pet’s health and well-being. Give Fido the best dog food you can afford, but don’t overindulge your furry pal with fatty treats or snacks. Ask your vet for specific nutritional recommendations.

Veterinary Care

Most dogs should see the vet at least once a year, though some pooches may need more frequent visits. In addition to getting his vaccines, Fido should be microchipped and spayed or neutered. Keeping up with your canine pal’s parasite control and dental care is also important. In between appointments, watch for any signs of illness. If you know or suspect that your pup isn’t feeling well, call your vet right away.

Training

In addition to being housetrained and crate trained, Fido should know basic doggy obedience commands such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Your four-legged buddy’s education isn’t just a matter of good manners: it’s also very important for safety reasons.

Stimulation/Activity

Dogs are very intelligent and active. Making sure Fido is getting enough activity is very important. You also want to make sure that your pooch has lots of fun toys to play with when you aren’t around, so he doesn’t get bored.

Security

Man’s Best Friend is a loyal and loving companion, but at the end of the day, he still thinks and acts like his wild forebears. Even the most loving dog can run off, or get into conflicts with other animals. Always keep Fido leashed, except in fenced doggy play zones. If you have a yard, check your fencing and gates, and make sure they are secure.

Tail Wags and Belly Rubs

Your loyal pet needs to feel loved in order to truly thrive. Spend time with your furry best friend every day: talk to Fido, pet him, and play with him. Don’t skimp on those belly rubs, either! Fido’s adorable smiles and tail wags are precious gifts in our book.
