Fourth of July Safety for Dogs

July 1, 2016

Independence Day is right around the corner. This is one of the most dangerous holidays for dogs, so you’ll want to take a few precautions to keep your canine buddy safe, healthy, and happy as we celebrate America’s birthday. A local Ashburn, VA vet offers some Fourth of July safety tips for Fido in this article.

Barbeque Safety

Many people enjoy grilling out on this summer holiday. If you’re hosting guests, keep a close eye on your furry friend, especially as people are coming or going. It’s much too easy for a dog to slip through an open door or gate! Toxic foods are another concern. Never give your pooch garlic, onions, or scallions; pitted fruits; avocado; alcohol; chocolate; caffeine; grapes, raisins, or currants; or products containing xylitol. Ask your guests to throw away leftovers immediately, and use trashcans that close securely, so Fido can’t dig leftovers out of the trash. Bug spray, hot coals or foods, and barbeque skewers are also dangerous for our canine pals.

Swimming

Are you planning to spend the afternoon at a lake or pool? Make sure your furry pal knows basic doggy obedience commands, such as  Sit Stay Come Heel , and  Lay Down , and don’t let him out of your sight near the water! If you’re going to a pool, make sure Fido knows where the pool stairs are. If you’re going boating, remember to put a life vest on your furry pal. Paw care is also important. Your pet can easily burn his feet by walking on hot surfaces. Fido’s paw pads will be extra delicate after he’s been swimming. This can make it very easy for him to get painful blisters. Use paw wax to protect your pup’s feet, and try to keep him on soft ground.

Fireworks

Sadly, every year, pets go missing after the Fourth of July. Many dogs are terrified by the sound of fireworks. Even the most loyal pooch can bolt in panic! Keep your canine buddy inside as much as possible. If Fido is frightened of loud noises, put him in a quiet back room, and turn on a TV or radio to mask the sounds. We also recommend making sure Fido is microchipped, and is wearing current ID tags.
