6 Ways to Keep Your Cat Healthy

February 1, 2017

Did you know that February is National Cat Health Month? This is one cause we can really support! One great thing about cats is that they are quite easy to take care of. However, keeping Fluffy healthy requires a lot more than just filling her bowl and offering your lap as a kitty bed. Below, an Ashburn, VA vet lists offers tips on keeping your cat healthy.

Veterinary Care

We know, visiting us isn’t Fluffy’s favorite way to spend her time. She’d much rather be napping! However, proper veterinary care is absolutely crucial to your kitty’s health and well-being. We recommend that all cats be spayed or neutered; microchipped; and kept up to date with parasite control products and vaccinations. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Good Food

Proper nutrition is very important! Choosing the right kind of cat food can be a bit tricky, especially when every brand proclaims that their product is the best. Don’t fall for clever marketing ploys. Ask your vet for recommendations, and do a bit of research on reading labels. (Tip: pick a cat food that has meat listed as its first and most numerous ingredient.)

Safety

Do you keep your cat inside? If so, that’s wonderful! Kitties are much safer and healthier as indoor pets. Make your home cozy and interesting for Fluffy by offering her fun toys, comfy beds, and a good window view.

Kittyproofing

As you’ve probably noticed, cats have a knack for getting into mischief. You’ll need to do some catproofing to keep Fluffy safe. Start by getting rid of any toxic plants. Next, remove or secure plastic bags, wrappers, and ties; medicine; chemicals; ropes and wires; and anything small or sharp.

Toys

Toys are of course lots of fun for Fluffy, but they also help keep her active. They’re great for her mind, too! Keep your kitty’s toy box full.

Watch For Illness

When cats are sick, they don’t typically announce it. Actually, your kitty may not let on that she doesn’t feel well until she’s very ill. Watch for any potential signs of sickness, like hiding, poor grooming, reduced appetite, litterbox issues, and vomiting or diarrhea. Contact your vet right away if you notice anything amiss.
