8 Ways to Get in Shape With Fido in 2019

January 1, 2019

Happy New Year! Are you making resolutions for 2019? Many of the goals people set for themselves on New Year’s Day involve fitness and weight loss. Our canine companions can actually make great workout buddies! Here, a Leesburg, VA vet offers some tips on getting fit with Fido this year.

Walks

Daily walks are a wonderful way for both you and Fido to get some exercise. Change up your route occasionally, and explore a new park or trail.

Sit-Ups

Incorporate your furry buddy into your abdominal routine by grabbing a doggy toy. Whenever you sit up, toss the toy.

Squats

Squats are a great way to work your lower body. Hold a dog toy out as you go up, so Fido has to jump for it. Then, move the toy into your other hand.

Tag

You may need to wait for warmer weather for this, but playing Tag with Fido is a fun way to get a workout in. Take turns chasing your pooch, and having him chase you.

Fetch

You can turn a game of Fetch into a great interval workout! After you toss the ball or stick for Fido, do jumping jacks or run in place until he returns. Every few minutes, alternate the cardio with lunges or squats.

Running

Fido can make a great jogging buddy! Just take time to build up his endurance slowly, by alternating walking and running. Bring along plenty of water for both of you. You may want to get a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser.

Hiking

Man’s Best Friend loves exploring! Hiking is a great way to burn calories. It’s also just good to get out into the wilderness, and get some fresh air.

Doga

Yoga with dogs can be lots of fun. Of course, Fido may be more interested in giving you puppy smooches than in helping you get fit. At least you’ll be smiling throughout your workout!

Tips

Not all exercises are safe for every dog. Ask your vet before starting Fido on a fitness regime. Also, be careful not to overexert your pooch. If your pet is panting heavily or seems tired, give him some water and let him relax. Fitness is a journey, not a destination!
