Tips for Adopting a New Cat

March 1, 2019

Are you considering bringing a new feline buddy into your home? Good for you! We always love seeing cats go to loving homes. Read on for some great tips from an Ashburn, VA vet on adopting a new cat.

Make The Commitment

Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment. Before making a final decision to bring a kitty into your home, make sure you are willing to offer your furball great food and care for the rest of her life. If you aren’t ready to make a long-term commitment, choose a pet with a shorter lifespan, like a hamster or gerbil.

Consider Getting Two

Our feline pals often get stressed and unhappy when they are too isolated. If you already have pets, then this may not really apply to you. However, if the kitty you’re adopting is going to be an only pet, you may want to think about getting her a buddy, especially if she will be home alone a lot.

Finding Fluffy

With so many wonderful kitties in need of good forever homes, it won’t be very hard to find your new furry friend. Animal shelters are a great place to look. You can also try local classifieds. Some people want cats of a specific breed or color, while others just want to find the pet that melts their heart. No matter what kind of kitty you want, or where you find her, spend a few minutes with Fluffy before you make a final decision.

Getting Ready

Before you bring your new kitty home, you’ll want to do some shopping. Your list should include toys, treats, at least once comfy bed, dishes, a litterbox and litter, and a brush. If you’re getting a kitten, avoid clay and clumping litters for now. As for food, if you know what Fluffy was eating, get that brand to start. You’ll want to make dietary changes slowly, and only after consulting your vet.

Settling In

There shouldn’t be much on the agenda for the first week. Fluffy will need to visit the vet, but otherwise, just let her relax and settle in. Don’t force attention on your pet: kitties feel safest when they can decide when it’s time to play or cuddle.
