Cute Ways To Spoil A Senior Kitty

October 1, 2019

Cats are adorable at any age, but they somehow manage to become even more endearing as they grow old. Fluffy will slowly lose interest in knocking everything off your table and pouncing on your toes, and spend her time napping and collecting forehead rubs. Read on as a local Ashburn, VA vet offers tips on keeping your furball’s little motor going in her golden years.

Senior-Friendly Facilities

Your kitty may have a hard time getting in and out of a litterbox that has very high sides. Get Fluffy a litterbox with low walls. If your home has more than one story, put litterboxes on every level.

Beds. Lots of Beds.

Did you know senior cats can spend up to 20 hours a day napping? Make sure your furball has lots of comfy beds to choose from.

Playtime!

Although Fluffy won’t be as frisky as she once was, she will still have her moments. You may very well be able to tempt your kitty into playing for a few minutes a day. This will be good for her both mentally and physically!

Nightlight

Your feline pal may develop issues with her vision and/or hearing as she grows older. Keeping a nightlight on will help her get around after dark.

Veterinary Care

Proper veterinary care is important to all cats, but it’s particularly crucial for senior pets. Having Fluffy thoroughly examined regularly will increase the odds of any medical issues being caught—and therefore treated—early. This can be very beneficial!

Proper Diet

It isn’t uncommon for senior cats to get, well, a bit pudgy. Chubby cats are cute, but Fluffy will be much healthier if she stays at or near her ideal weight. Follow your vet’s nutritional recommendations.

Brushing

Your feline buddy may get stiff and sore in her golden years. This can make it hard for Fluffy to reach her whole body when grooming herself. Help your furball out by brushing her regularly. This will keep her coat soft and smooth, and keep your pet from feeling hot or itchy.

Love

Your kitty’s mental health is just as important as her physical well-being. Keep that little motor going by paying attention to Fluffy, and making her feel loved.
