Cold Weather Cat Care

December 1, 2019

Winter is on the way! Kitties are quite independent, but they do need good care in order to thrive. You’ll want to take some steps to keep Fluffy warm, cozy, and purring this winter. An Ashburn, VA vet discusses winter cat care below.

Comfy Beds

Cats are always looking for warm places to curl up in. In fact, they sleep even more than usual in cold, dreary weather. Fluffy will enjoy a comfy heated bed or thermal blanket.

Weather

We strongly recommend keeping kitties indoors. Your cat may be wearing a fur coat, but the cold weather is still dangerous to her. Cats are often prone to getting frostbite, especially on their ears and the tips of their tails. Fluffy could also get stuck somewhere in a snowstorm. If you do let your furball out, make sure she has an emergency shelter. This can be a tote with a hole cut in one end. Cats that go outdoors may also need bigger food portions in winter. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze is a huge concern for kitties in winter. It’s extremely toxic to cats, but unfortunately has a taste many of them like. Clean up any spills immediately, and cover damp spots with sand or kitty litter.

Senior Cats

Older kitties often get very stiff and sore in cold weather. Ask your vet about giving your cat supplements. Fish oil, for instance, can help lubricate stiff bones and joints. You may also want to get pet ramps or stairs to help Fluffy reach her favorite napping spots more easily.

Lights

The sun goes down very early in winter. If you leave Fluffy home by herself, turn a light on before you leave, so your furball isn’t left alone in the dark.

Playtime

Fluffy may spend a good chunk of winter sleeping. Don’t let her become a complete couch potato! Take time to play with your kitty regularly.

Fire/Heating Elements

As mentioned above, kitties love seeking out warm spots. Use grates before fireplaces, so Fluffy won’t get singed. Also, keep candles and potpourri burners in high spots she can’t reach.

Snuggles

Spend some quality time with your furball this winter. It’s always nice to settle in with a good book or movie, a hot beverage, and a purring cat!
