Spring With Fido

April 1, 2021

Spring is off icially upon us! Many of our canine patients are more than happy to run and play outdoors as it warms up. There are few things more adorable than a dog happily bounding around a lawn or field. Just be sure to put Fido’s safety first. A local Ashburn, VA vet offers some seasonal care tips below.

Parasites

Preventative care is important all year round, but it’s particularly crucial at this time of year. Fleas, ticks, and other parasites will soon be out in full force. Make sure that Fido is up to date on his vaccinations. Your furry buddy should also be microchipped and wearing ID tags.

Heat

Things can heat up pretty quickly in April. Make sure that your canine companion is ready for the warmer weather. If you usually get Fido a haircut before summer, this is a good time to make that appointment. You may also want to set out an extra water station.

Shedding

You may find yourself dealing with some extra pet fur over the next few weeks. Brushing Fido daily will help a lot. If your pooch is a heavy shedder, get a brush specifically made for his type of coat. Use a squeegee, rubber dish gloves, or a damp sponge to remove your canine pal’s fur from furniture and upholstery.

Seasonal Hazards

Like any other season, spring presents its own unique dangers. Around Easter, you’ll need to keep those chocolate bunnies and plastic decorations out of pa ws’ reach. You’ll also need to keep your pup in mind when gardening or doing landscaping. Many popular plants and flowers, such as tulips and daffodils, are toxic to dogs. Check the ASPCA site for more info. Lawn/garden products, such as chemicals and pesticides, are also unsafe. Dogs can ingest them by running through recently treated patches, and then licking their paws. Keep Fido away from areas you’ve treated until they’ve been watered or rained on.

Adventures

As the sunny days return, both people and pets will be happy to get outdoors and enjoy some sunshine and fresh air. Get Fido’s cute tail wagging by bringing him to a park or trail. What better way to spend a summer day than by exploring a pretty spot with your furry best friend?
