Summer Care For Puppies

August 1, 2021

Have you recently adopted a young dog? Puppies may be small, but they certainly do bring a lot of love and light into our lives. That first year is critical, as so much of Fido’s physical, mental, and emotional growth happens within the first 12 months of his life. Puppies are also very vulnerable to illness and injury. A Leesburg, VA vet offers some summer puppy care tips below.

Curiosity

Little Fido is very curious about, well, everything. Dogs often try to learn about things by eating them, which can be dangerous. Pay close attention to your cute pet! Puppyproofing is a must, but you’ll also need to be vigilant when you’re out and about in places like dog parks. Don’t let the little guy pick up that chicken leg someone dropped at the park, or poke around in a leaf pile that could potentially be housing a snake. Toxic plants are another concern.

Socialization

Summer is a great time for socializing, which is crucial for young dogs! Introducing your canine pal to lots of different, friendly people and dogs while he’s young will help him grow into an open minded, easygoing adult pooch. Have a puppy party, bring him to to the park, or schedule doggy playdates.

Heat

He can also get thirsty very fast, especially when he’s running and playing. Make sure the little guy always has plenty of water, and take care not to overexert him. Dogs often push themselves to please their humans. Puppies don’t always know their limits, and can overdo it very quickly. He may enjoy splashing around in a kiddie pool or the spray from a hose on hot days.

Basics

Little Fido needs proper veterinary care to truly thrive. Get your furry buddy started out on the right paw in life by keeping him caught up on recommended care! We strongly advise that all dogs be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on vaccines, exams, and parasite control. Ask your vet for an appointment schedule.

Activities

Take advantage of the warm weather, and bring Fido outside for training and playtime. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures! That adorable toddler phase will be over before you know it!
