Common Dog Care Mistakes

November 1, 2022
Did you know that dogs are the most popular pet in the U.S. We’ve been friends with Fido for a very long time, perhaps as much as 30,000 years. However, while we’ve gotten to know our furry best friend pretty well, it’s easy to remember that he has different needs than we do, and doesn’t see at things the same way as us. Read on as a local Ashburn, VA vet lists some common dog care mistakes.

Chewing/Eating Mishaps

Many of our canine pals will eat pretty much anything. That can be very dangerous! The consequences of Fido chewing on or eating something unsafe can range from a mild tummy upset to life-threatening issues, such as choking or severe gastrointestinal injuries. Keep anything potentially dangerous out of paws’ reach.

Overfeeding

We know, Fido is really cute. He’s also really good at that sad stare that melts our hearts and gets us to fork over yummy snacks. However, this is one area where you really do have to be wary about too much of a good thing. Even being a few pounds overweight can be detrimental to your furry buddy’s health!

Lack Of Training

Training isn’t just a matter of etiquette. It’s very important for you to be able to control your dog! Proper training can help you keep Fido out of dangerous situations and/or stop him from running off. Make sure your pooch obeys basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down.

Letting Fido Roam

Our canine companions are very loyal. However, they’re also hardwired to run after—or sometimes, away from—things. Fido also has a strong sense of adventure, and loves to investigate new places. It’s very easy for even the loyalest dog to run off! Err on the side of caution here. Keep your pup leashed whenever you take him off your property. If you have a yard, make sure it’s securely fenced in.

Negative Reinforcement

Fido is a very good boy, but he isn’t perfect. Sooner or later, he’s going to misbehave. When he does, don’t punish him for it. Dogs don’t understand punishment, especially after the fact. That may just frighten or upset your pup, or make him see you as a threat. Focus on rewarding good behavior instead. Do you have questions about your pet’s health or care?
