Things To Consider
Before deciding to take your cat for a walk, there are some things for you to keep in mind, such as Fluffy’s personality. If your kitty is shy, and/or has always been an indoor cat, it may be best to just leave well enough alone. However, if your furball is bold or super adventurous, or used to be allowed outside, regular walks can be a great way to get her some exercise and keep her entertained.
Before you can walk Fluffy, you’ll need to get some proper equipment. We recommend choosing a harness, rather than a collar, for safety reasons. Make sure your kitty’s gear fits well!
Once you have your four-legged pal’s gear picked out, you’ll need to get her used to it. Start by just having Fluffy wear her harness indoors. Offer your furball praise, toys, and treats when you put the harness on her, so she forms a good association with it. When your feline pal is used to her harness, attach the leash, and just let her drag it around. Be sure to supervise your cat very carefully during this stage. Never leave her unattended with her equipment on. You don’t want her getting caught on something!
When Fluffy seems comfortable with her harness and leash, you can go ahead and try taking her outside. A few minutes is fine for the first time. Your furry friend may seem uneasy at first, but kitty curiosity should take over pretty quickly. If your furball doesn’t seem to be adjusting to being outdoors, and/or seems very scared, take her back inside. However, if your pet seems to be enjoying her ‘field trip,’ then you can gradually increase her outdoor time.
Pay close attention to where you go when walking your cat. Don’t bring your feline friend near any trees. The last thing you want is for Fluffy to climb a tree while wearing her harness! Stay away from high-traffic areas as well.
