Shedding Season With Fido

Spring is here! If you have a dog or a cat, it’s probably safe to assume that you’ll be dealing with some extra fur over the next month or so, as your pet changes into their summer outfit. A Leesburg, VA vet offers some advice on helping Fido get through spring in this article.

Brushing

The best thing you can do is brush your four-legged friend daily. Weather permitting, take Fido outdoors for his beauty sessions. That way, that dead hair will just blow away, instead of getting stuck to everything. (Note: many birds may find your pup’s fur quite useful for building their nests!) You may still want to wear an apron, though, so you don’t end up covered.

Vacuum

The vacuum is another important tool in your fur-fighting arsenal. Try to make it a habit to vacuum every day. You don’t have to go too crazy here. Just do the high traffic areas and your furry buddy’s favorite lounging spots daily, and follow up with more thorough cleanings every week or so. A robotic vacuum may make this easier, but it’s best to only use these when you’re around to supervise. The last thing you want is for it to spread a mess around when you’re not there!

Filters

The change of seasons is a good reminder to change your air filters. You may want to get a good air purifier as well. This will be particularly helpful if anyone in your household has allergies.

Bedding

Don’t forget about your pet’s bedding! Use hot water and a hypoallergenic detergent for washable beds or coverings. You may also find your own furniture getting, well, a bit furry. You can use a damp sponge, rubber gloves, or squeegee to remove fur from upholstery. Washable slipcovers may also come in handy at this time of year.

Bathtime

Many of our canine patients don’t get bathed anywhere near as much in winter as they do in summer. Once it’s warm enough, give Fido a good bath. Or, better yet, take him to the groomer’s. You get to drop off a dirty pup and then, a few hours later, pick up a clean, fresh-smelling one. No muss, no fuss! Another option is to look for a carwash with a dog-washing station.
