Keeping Your Dog Active

April 1, 2023

April is Active Dog Month. It’s very important for Fido to get regular physical activity. This will help keep his muscles fit and strong, and will generally just help keep him healthy and happy. However, doggy workouts are definitely not one-size-fits-all. An Ashburn, VA vet offers some advice on your fuzzy pal’s exercise needs in this article.

Keep It Consistent

While physical exercise is crucial to your canine pal’s health and well-being, you’ll need to be careful not to overdo it. Endurance must be built up slowly. If Fido usually gets just a few short walks, a long vigorous hike on the weekends may be too much for him.

Choose Suitable Activities

Not all exercises are suitable for every pooch. Small dogs may get plenty of exercise running around the house or yard, while a Greyhound may need a few vigorous walks or even runs daily. Talk to your vet, and find out exactly what is and isn’t right for Fido.

Try New Things

You may have seen videos of dogs skateboarding, dock diving, or even surfing. Fido definitely believes in living life to the fullest! There’s nothing wrong with trying new things. Your pooch may enjoy different doggy sports, such as agility training. If you work out at home, you can also incorporate your canine buddy into your routine.

Don’t Overdo It

Take care not to push your four-legged pal too hard. If you are out and about, bring plenty of water along for Fido, and watch for signs that he is getting tired. Heavy panting is usually the first red flag. If you see anything off, immediately take a break, then head home.

Adjust As Needed

Your canine companion’s exercise needs will change over time. As Fido ages, he’ll lose stamina, and  he’ll slowly become more interested in watching squirrels than chasing them. For senior dogs, walking, swimming, and playing is usually plenty of activity. Let your pup pick the pace, and be extra vigilant for signs of fatigue. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Have Fun

Spending time with Fido shouldn’t be something you think of as a chore. There’s no better way to relax after a hard day than by spending time with your furry best friend. Enjoy yourself! You’ll reap the rewards of that regular activity as well.
