With summer just around the corner, many of us are making plans for the next few months. Many of our feline patients’ summer agendas are also filling up … with naps, mostly. Once it gets hot, Fluffy will spend a lot of her time lounging around and trying to stay cool. Why not offer her a yummy frozen treat? A local Ashburn, VA vet lists a few good ones below.
Cold Cat Milk
Despite common misconceptions, cow’s milk really isn’t safe for cats. However, you can find cat milk in many pet stores. Keep some in the fridge for Fluffy to enjoy on scorching afternoons.
Tuna Bites
Combine some plain tuna in water with plain frozen yogurt. You can also add a bit of parsley. Divide into small portions, and freeze. (Tip: a bottlecap works well for divvying up portion sizes.)
Ice Cube
Make Fluffy some of her own ice. You can mix tuna water or sodium-free broth with water, and freeze it in an ice cube tray. Or, pour the liquid over kibble or kitty treats, then freeze it. Another option is to drizzle tuna water or gravy over an ice cube or some shaved ice. Just make sure that the gravy doesn’t contain garlic or onions: these things aren’t safe for cats.
Broth
Many kitties will enjoy a bowl of plain, sodium-free beef, chicken, or fish broth. This is a great snack, as it also contains electrolytes, which will help hydrate your furball.
Ice Cream
You may have heard of doggy ice cream, but did you know that there is now also ice cream made just for kitties? Look in pet stores and grocery markets. If you don’t have any luck, you can order it online.
Frozen Meal
It doesn’t get much easier than this! Freeze a can of wet food that has a lot of gravy in it. You can add water to thin it out if you need to. Slice off small pieces for treats.
Slushies
Combine some canned cat food with ice and sodium-free broth. Mix it in a blender to make your kitty her own slushy.
Frozen Yogurt
Frozen yogurt is a favorite summer snack for people. It’s also fine for kitties! Offer Fluffy about a tablespoon of plain, lactose-free yogurt. Choose a brand with minimal sugar.
