Effective Date: 08/03/26

At Lansdowne Animal Hospital, our priority is providing safe, effective, and timely care for every patient. Prescription medications are part of your pet’s medical treatment plan and must be carefully managed to ensure they remain appropriate and safe.

Prescription Refills

All prescription refill requests must be submitted directly by the pet owner and require a minimum of 48 business hours’ notice. Requests submitted on weekends or holidays will be processed during normal business hours. Same-day refills cannot be guaranteed, and we encourage clients to request medications before they run out.

Each refill request is reviewed by a veterinarian based on your pet’s medical history, current health status, examination history, required monitoring, and applicable medical and legal requirements. Prescription approval is not guaranteed and remains at the discretion of the prescribing veterinarian.

Certain medications may require a current physical examination, laboratory testing, or blood work before refills can be authorized. Your veterinarian will determine these requirements based on your pet’s condition, the medication prescribed, and current standards of care.

Outside Pharmacy Policy

Clients who wish to use an outside pharmacy must contact Lansdowne Animal Hospital directly to request a written or electronic prescription when permitted by law.

We do not process, authorize, or respond directly to prescription requests submitted by outside pharmacies, including fax, phone, email, electronic authorization systems, or automatic refill requests. All prescriptions must be requested by the pet owner through our hospital.

This policy helps reduce delays and miscommunication and ensures prescriptions remain accurate and properly documented in your pet’s medical record. It also helps avoid issues related to varying pharmacy requirements, medication availability, and communication challenges that can impact timely patient care.

Our Online Pharmacy

For convenience, we offer an online pharmacy through our hospital website. This provides a safe and reliable source for prescription medications, preventatives, prescription diets, and other veterinary-approved products.

Benefits include:

  • Convenient online ordering
  • Home delivery
  • Veterinary team prescription review
  • Manufacturer-authorized products
  • Automatic refill options for eligible medications
  • Accurate prescription tracking in your pet’s medical record

Controlled Substance Prescriptions

Controlled substances are subject to additional federal and state regulations and require closer monitoring. Examples include gabapentin, hydrocodone, tramadol, phenobarbital, and similar medications.

All controlled substance refill requests must be submitted directly by the pet owner. We do not accept controlled medication requests from outside pharmacies.

Certain controlled medications require that your pet has been examined by one of our veterinarians within the previous six months before a prescription or refill can be authorized. Additional requirements such as blood work, testing, or rechecks may also be necessary depending on the medication and your pet’s condition.

Refills are not guaranteed and remain at the professional discretion of the prescribing veterinarian. Some medications may require in-person pickup with valid identification and are subject to all applicable laws and regulations.

Lost, stolen, damaged, or prematurely depleted controlled medications will not be replaced without veterinarian approval and may require a re-examination.

Prescription Eligibility

All prescriptions require a valid Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) and are subject to the professional judgment of the prescribing veterinarian, as well as all applicable federal and state laws.

Lansdowne Animal Hospital reserves the right to decline any prescription or refill request that does not meet medical, legal, or safety requirements.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. These policies help us ensure safe medication use, accurate recordkeeping, and the highest standard of care for every patient.
