Today, May 1st, is Mayday for Mutts! Some of our most adorable patients are mutts. There’s a lot to be said for these lovable and unique pups! A Leesburg, VA vet discusses mutts in this article.



What Is A Mutt?

The official definition of a mutt is ‘a dog that is descended from more than one breed.’ The word ‘mutt’ was often used as a slur. However, we happen to think mutts—or mongrels, as they are sometimes called—are pretty great!

The fun thing about mutts is that so many of them don’t look like any other dogs. In some cases, you can tell that Fido has a specific breed or two in his family tree. Then there are other mutts that look like the result of a genetic Mr. Potatohead game, with a mixed bag of adorably mismatched traits.

Pawsome Pets

It’s estimated that as many as 95 percent of the dogs in shelters are mixed breeds, though some sources put that number closer to 75 percent. If you’re ready to bring a new pup into your home, consider getting a mix!

Health Benefits

It’s easy to understand why people like purebreds. Not only are they very pretty, you can also get a good idea of what they will look like, what their grooming and care needs will be, and what general personality traits they may have. However, there are some downsides. Purebreds are often more prone to health issues than mutts, because their gene pool is much smaller.  That makes them susceptible to a variety of issues, such as cancer, bone/joint issues, immune system deficiencies, and respiratory issues. They’re also much more expensive! And while there are some wonderful breeders out there, unfortunately there are also some who are more interested in profit than in puppies’ welfare.

Going With The Flow

Many people insist that mutts make the best pets, and we really can’t argue. They not only tend to be healthier, many of them have absolutely wonderful temperaments!
